VA Home Modification Grants

Specially Adapted Housing Program

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers grants to veterans and servicemembers who have service-connected disabilities to help in modifying an existing home to meet their adaptive needs or for the purpose of constructing an adaptive home. The Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) and the Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant amounts and qualifications vary by grant.

Home Improvements and Structural Alterations Program

The Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) program is administered by the VHA's Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service. Through the HISA program Veterans with service-connected or nonservice-connected disabilities may receive assistance for home improvements necessary for disability access to the home and essential lavatory and sanitary facilities. Grant amounts vary depending on service-connected or nonservice-connected disability.
